Project Title Novel Cobalt(III) Complexes Incorporating Amino Acid-Reduced Schiff Bases
Synopsis

Cobalt is a metal that can undergo selective transitions between +2 and +3 oxidation states with its complexes, and contains certain redox properties unobserved in other transition metal species. It is also compatible with the human body as seen in the case of Cobalamin(Vitamin B12). Reduced Schiff bases are a subset of amines that exhibit a large range of biological activities1. Currently, there is little research done in the field of cobalt(III) complexes and their properties. Hence, the aim of this project is to synthesise new cobalt(III) compounds with potential biomedical purposes. Cobalt starting materials, tetraamminecarbonatocobalt(III) nitrate and sodium Tricarbonatocobaltate trihydrate, and amino acid-reduced Schiff bases are to be synthesised in-lab as none are commercially available. The products were then characterised by ultraviolet-visible spectrophotometry, infrared spectroscopy, mass spectrometry, X-ray crystallography and proton nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy.
