Project Title Multi-Purpose Floating Structures
Synopsis Singapore is currently facing land and energy shortage issues. In land
scarce Singapore, land needs to be allocated for many purposes such as
housing, recreation and commercial use. Hence modular floating
structures can be built for offshore farms, parks, factories
or possibly, nuclear plants. The increasing concern about global
warming from the emission of greenhouse gases has provided a strong
impetus for Singapore to research on renewable and clean energy. One
way obtain clean energy is to build a nuclear plant. However, Singapore
is a small island nation of 719.1 km^2, hence it is not safe to have a
nuclear plant on the mainland. An alternative location to build the
nuclear power plant is on floating platforms far enough from the
mainland in the sea. Russia has already explored this technology and
constructed nuclear power plants on floating platforms. A 70 MW
floating nuclear power station based on a KLT-40C pressurised
light-water reactor has been built in St Petersburg and launched.
Thus the aim of the project was to come up with a multi-purpose
floating structure, introducing ways to help Singapore cope with
the land and energy shortage issue we are currently facing. (193 words)
