Project Title

Sense of Sight



Synopsis

According to the World Health Organisation, there are 285 million visually impaired individuals worldwide. Those figures include 246 million people with low vision, and 39 million people who are visually impaired. 


While the current solution for the visually impaired to live normal lives is to use a white cane so they can “feel” their surroundings serves its purpose, this oversimplified solution is far from ideal. The traditional white cane lacks several important features, which makes use difficult, such as when it is dropped or misplaced, or when in a crowded area, where the elongated white cane poses a tripping hazard, a safety concern for both the user and the public. 


That is why we are designing a reimagined white cane, one that keeps all the features that the visually handicapped rely on, and adding new and innovative systems that will enhance usability. At its heart, our design replaces entire segments of a white cane with advanced ultrasonic and infrared sensors, working in tandem, which effectively removes tripping hazards, while maintaining all of its functionality. 


We think our all-in-one solution will provide a monumental leap in helping the visually handicapped lead more ordinary, meaningful lives.
