Project Title An analysis of the evolution of LGBTQ+-related speeches made by Barack Obama
through the use of Critical Discourse Analysis and Systemic Functional Grammar
Synopsis This research assesses the role of Barack Obama and his speeches regarding the LGBTQ+
movement in shaping the culture of and representing the LGBTQ+ community. This paper
studies the evolution of speeches made by Obama across his presidential term between 2009
to 2017 in terms of function, as identified by their inherent features, through the use of
Critical Discourse Analysis in conjunction with Systemic Functional Grammar. This paper
concludes that the function of the speeches has evolved from galvanising people into action
to expressing gratitude and encouraging the people, and that Obama’s role has evolved from
a champion of the LGBTQ+ cause to a representative of the community.ur synopsis here
