Project Title Effects Of Plant Extracts and Vitamins on Alzheimer's Disease

Alzheimers Disease (AD), being characterized by severe memory loss, is the most common progressive neurodegenerative disease with no widespread cure or treatment. AD is triggered by the formation of -amyloid plaques between neurons in the brain, disrupting synaptic transmissions and leading to inflammation and brain cell death. Plant extracts, specifically Panax ginseng, Lycium barbarum, Curcuma longa, Ligusticum striatum, Chrysanthemum indicum and Ginkgo biloba, have been shown to exhibit properties that could potentially inhibit the development of Alzheimers disease, including cholinesterase inhibition, anti-inflammatory effects and antioxidant activity. However, the effects of these plant extracts on the reduction of paralysis in the nematode Caenorhabditis elegans CL1476, a model organism commonly used in studies involving basic genetic and molecular mechanisms of human development and disease including AD, have not been researched yet, thus their effect on AD has not been investigated. Hence this research investigated the ability of these plant extracts to reduce paralysis in C. elegans CL4176 and compared antioxidant effect of these extracts. It was found that different plant extracts caused a reduction in paralysis in C. elegans CL4176 to different extents and also showed different levels of radical scavenging activity in the DPPH test. Plant extracts that significantly reduced paralysis in C. elegans CL4176 and showed the highest levels of radical scavenging activity were Lycium barbarum, Ligusticum striatum and Ginkgo biloba, hence suggesting that antioxidants may have a part to play in reducing paralysis in C. elegans CL4176 and may inhibit Alzheimers Disease
