Project Title Testing of crude coconut oil extract for antibacterial, antifungal and antioxidant properties for use as food preservative
Synopsis Coconut waste is commonly thrown away, but the oil in the coconut waste has several uses. In this case, it will be used as a food preservative. Coconut oil has been proven to have antibacterial and antifungal properties, thus protecting food from contamination or expiration for a longer period of time.

The coconut oil is first extracted using a soxhlet extractor, with 40g of coconut waste to 100ml of hexane. The oil and hexane solution is then left to dry for a day, evaportaing all hexane. The oil obtained is then diluted in 50% ethanol and used in various tests. For the antibacterial test, the well diffusion test will be used. For the antioxidant test, the DPPH test will be used. Lastly, for the antifungal test, we will measure the diameter growth of the fungi.
